The British Council is proud to support Hisham Matar as part of the 2012 Sydney Writers’ Festival. The festival is a celebration of Australian and international writers and will be exploring the increasingly blurred line between public and private. Matar will be presenting the festival’s opening address, The Private Moment.
Matar was born in Libya and now resides in London. Matar’s family fled Libya in 1979, due to political reasons. His father was later kidnapped and what has happened to him since remains unconfirmed.

Matar has channelled the tragedy of this experience into writing. His debut novel, In the Country of Men, was published in 2006. Set in Libya, the semi autobiographical book is a story of a young boy who is confronted by the private fallout of a public nightmare, when his father is exposed for conducting anti-Gaddafi activity.

The book has been has won six international literary awards and has been translated into 28 languages.

In addition to presenting the opening address, Matar will also speak at another event facilitated by Suzanne Leal. Prior to becoming an author Suzanne practised criminal law and was on the Refugee Review Tribunal and her conversation with Matar will prove to be thought provoking.

British Council, in partnership with Australia Business Arts Foundation, is pleased to present an exciting and innovative tour of events presented by Peter Tullin and Simon Cronshaw, co-founders of CultureLabel.com UK.

CultureLabel.com was initiated by Peter and Simon in 2007 with the aim to create a site where art, product, design, heritage, fashion, culture and more could be found. They have a particular focus on the relationship between cultural entrepreneurship and commercial income generation for the arts.

The London-based pair are interested in the opportunities and challenges that are arising from the transformation of the global cultural sector with the emergence of new technologies, consumer trends and business models. Their key focus is on ways cultural organisations can create new commercial income streams on the strength of what they already possess – great content, great experiences and great brands.

Around the country they will be presenting trend briefing sessions as well as intensive workshops designed to help cultural organisations develop big ideas for reaching new consumers and unlocking new income generation streams.

Peter and Simon will draw on the content of their influential book ‘Intelligent Naivety’; a blueprint for would-be cultural entrepreneurs. They will also present a sneak preview of their new book REMIX – Culture, Technology, Entrepreneurship (published later in 2012), which explores the key technology and consumer trends that will impact the cultural sector over the next 5-10 years in terms of audience development and associated income generation opportunities.

From new partnership and business models for the cultural industry (including crowd sourcing and commercial branding through cultural assets), to new consumer journeys into culture (the digital experience and the virtual visitor, audience profiling systems and digital hotspots for the new cultural communities), Peter and Simon’s models are pivotal to the success of every cultural organisation and this will be a unique opportunity to hear Peter and Simon speak.

CultureLabel.com will be presenting in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

Event details can be found at www.abaf.org.au/events

British Council Australia will be supporting an exciting exchange of young producers between Next Wave and Fierce. The outcomes of the exchanges will be presented at both festivals from 2012- 2014.

Laura McDermott and Harun Morrison, who are joint Artistic Directors of Fierce Festival, will be part of Next Wave’s Residents crew and will be participating in various events throughout the festival.

Both Next Wave and Fierce Festival have developed reputations for curating risk-taking and innovative art forms that push the bounds of audience engagement whilst at the same time provide a platform for emerging artists to exhibit their work.

Fierce and Next Wave both have a desire to create deep and lasting connections between Australian and UK artists; this exchange will explore sustainable ways for collaborating on an international scale well as establishing a relationship between the cities by focusing on ideas of locality and site.

The exchange will also investigate new models for festival audiences to engage in the arts.
